Converter! ~ Unit and Currency Calculator

I must admit that whenever I am looking for a unit conversion, I usually just type it into google search and the unit conversion is just an enter away. However, that’s when I have my handy 3G network coverage. More than a few occasions when I was on a business or vacation trip where data roaming cost is like legal robbery, I wish I have a nice little unit converter save the day.

Out of the tons and tons of unit converter on the appStore, how to find one that’s have a slick interface and easy to use? Don’t worry; we have done the hard work for you! Converter! ~ Unit and Currency Calculator is our top pick. It has a very slick and cool interface, the default skin looks like an extension of the iPhone calculator app. At first, the app seems quite overwhelming. It has over 400 units conversions and almost everything you see on the screen are interactive. The first unique feature I noticed is the notification like tab in the middle of the screen right above the keypad, it allows you to switch between the keypad and the converter selection.

The converter selection interface has everything you want and you will ever need. The side by side unit selection are pretty self-explanatory. When you look at the design of the side scroller at the bottom of the screen, you can tell they have put a lot of effort into the UI design.

The most useful feature I found in the app is the ability to add favourite conversion. Like most of us, we usually deal with the usual 5 to 10 unit conversion in a daily basis. You are controlling this gigantic cat of your choice to roaming around the city to collect items like yarn ball, milk bottom, fish bowl and the like while picking up fish treats on your way. The control is kind of confusing at the start, since I have picked the Buster the dog mode where Buster was right next to me when the game started. I was trying to move the cat by dragging it around, but somehow always got bounced back to the same beginning location.

After getting the hang of it, I can immediately see how addictive the game can get. It could be the best game ever for kids with an iPad. The control is simple and elegance especially suited for kids starting to develop motor and eye hand coordination skills. With just a touch, the cat will find the shortest route to the destination of the touch. The objective is to collect all items in the mission while avoiding Buster the dog. It quickly turns into a cat and mouse game, or shall we say cats and dogs game

There are tons to explore in CatCity, you can unlock levels, characters by earning coins with sweat and skills. Or you can get on the fast track by purchasing coins to unlock all levels in one go! All in all, I found CatCity highly amusing and entertaining. It’s currently $0.99, get it NOW!

Are you like most of the iPhone, or shall we say, iOS device users, that are just sick and tired of all the same old apps that have artificially stayed on the top paid/free chat for the last few years?

I mean, really? Angry Birds, Doodle Jump, Fruit Ninja, Cut the Rope and god forbid, Run! Is it even possible? We lost track of how many downloads it takes to stay on the top 10, let’s say 20,000 download per day for a paid app. If an app is on the top chart for 3 years, that’s 22 million downloads. iPhone sales forecast hits 100 millions in 2011. That means, 1 in 5 users has paid for one of those top apps. It is really suspicious how many of those downloads are from robot itune accounts created by venture capital funded start-ups. 1st Grade Math – Splash Math is the first of the charming Splash Math series. On the date of this review, StudyPad has already released the first 4 of the Splash Math from grade 1 to grade 4. It shows that they are in this app business seriously, not just aiming for a one app wonder.

The app comes with 2 full version, iPhone and iPad. The iPhone version can be used to keep you kid engaged on the road while the iPad version is better for learning at home.

When you first launch the app, it will ask you to type in your kid’s name and gender and there is an option to choose to send a weekly report to your email address. I found this to be a very neat feature because it teaches your kids in an early age to learn discipline and achieve specific goal on their own. All you need to do is check the weekly report and provide timely guidance.

Once you enter the first screen, the app will provide step by step instructions on how to use the app. There are basically 2 modes Practice and Play. I suggest going to practice and get familiarize with the game play together with your kids and let your kids explore other features. Splash Math has eye catching graphics, engaging background music and a secret prize section. As they progress through the exercises, they will be award prizes in the aquarium.

Splash Math is truly a refreshing way to learn math and deserve a 5 stars. I suggest you get the 1st grade version while it’s free and test it on iphone and ipad to see which one you like the most and unlock the workbooks through in-app purchase when you decided on the version.

Leapin’ Leprechaun Lite

This time we are going to look at Leapin’ Leprechaun Lite. It is a brand new game by by Mobile Magnus released just before St. Patrick’s Day. Pretty impressive with the thoughtful timing.

For those who are not familiar with the Irish folklore, a leprechaun is a type of fairy in Irish folklore that spends most of his time making shoes and stores all the gold in a hidden pot under the end of the rainbow.

Like most of the educational / kid game these days, Leapin’ Leprechaun appears to be targeting the younger audience. With the simpler and addicting game play, it’s ideal for anyone from toddler to teenagers. It sure will keep them busy for the whole afternoon. The eye catching graphics along with the Irish folksong background music will surely captivate the players. The game play is simple, yet challenging. The goal of the game is to touch and flick Paddy the Leprechaun into one of the pot of gold. Every time he successfully land inside the pot, you will receive a certain number of gold coins.

But beware, Paddy has a naughty mouth. Every time he misses the pot, he will blur out his “opinion” of your skills~ I am sure this “feature” alone will leave youngster giggling in the living room for the whole afternoon.

The app has a powerful location detector that detects the location you are in and redirects you to the discussions which are related to those locations. You can also choose by location and engage in the discussions of those areas.

There is a lot of unique features in LoYakk. Most social network require you to register and then sign in to be able to use the service. That means using a service anonymously is impossible. It allows you to meet people if you choose to reveal yourself and not just access the service anonymously, and get to know them in context to the location. You can engage in discussions and get to know about a place and at the same time provide assistance and even get your own queries sorted out.
